UA System Makes Top 100 for US Patents

June 18, 2015

Regular visitors to our online domicile know that we maintain a database of U.S. patents issued to Arkansas inventors and assigned to Arkansas entities.

It's updated weekly here

IA loves patents, especially when they come from Arkansas inventors, universities and companies.

In that vein, Arkansas Business has this post about the top 100 U.S. patent-producing universities in the world, and the University of Arkansas System is tied for 65th.

Pretty impressive. More from AB:

The UA comes in at No. 65, tied with four other institutions: the Universities of Kentucky and Virginia, Yale University and Ohio State University.

The nonprofit ranked the top 100 universities for U.S. utility patents produced in 2014. Topping the list is the University of California System, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University of China, Stanford University, the University of Texas, the California Institute of Technology, the University of Wisconsin, Johns Hopkins, Columbia University and the University of Michigan.

See the full list, from the National Academy of Inventors, here.

The UA system's 32 patents (it's the biggest producer of patents in the state) place it in a tie for third with Kentucky among SEC schools (for what it's worth) behind Florida and Vanderbilt.

Eight SEC schools (with their respective systems) made the top 100:

  • Florida, tied for 20th on the list with 87 patents in 2014;
  • Vandy, No. 41, with 55;
  • Arkansas and UK, tied for 65th with 32;
  • Texas A&M, Georgia and Missouri, tied for No. 73 with 30;
  • Tennessee, tied for 91st with 20.
