Universities + Entrepreneurs = Opportunities

July 22, 2009
Mutually beneficial partnerships between research universities and young startups can transcend even the most dreary economic climate. Just look at California, where collaboration in the field of nanotechnology is attracting millions in research and development grants to the state. Similar opportunities exist here in Arkansas. Each of the state's primary research institutions works with entrepreneurs to deliver ideas to the marketplace.
  • The BioVentures program at UAMS works to bring research discoveries, innovations and breakthroughs from the laboratory to the marketplace by providing business development expertise, laboratories and funding opportunities to its university-based startup companies. Think IA client Omnibalm.
  • The mission of the University of Arkansas Technology Development Foundation is to stimulate a knowledge-based economy through partnerships that lead to new opportunities for learning and discovery, build and retain a knowledge-based workforce, and spawn the development of new technologies that enrich the economic base of Arkansas. Think IA client Silicon Solar Solutions.
  • The Nanotechnology Center at UALR is a state-of-the-art, user-oriented facility focused on education, research and economic development. (A new $15 million facility could be on the horizon.) Its mission is to advance the science of nanotechnology through research and outreach and to accelerate technological innovations into practical applications for Arkansas and society. Think IA client Orlumet
  • UALR's College of Engineering & Information Technology is fast becoming one of the finest teaching and research facilities for advanced engineering, integrated technology and computer-based applications. Think IA client Black Oak Partners.
  • The Arkansas Biosciences Institute based at ASU in Jonesboro encompasses the collaborative research efforts of five institutions through agricultural and medical research to improve the health of Arkansans. Think IA client IST.
The collaboration is in place. As research builds and Arkansas startups grow and spawn more entrepreneurs, Arkansans should enjoy the payoff for years to come. e2t3hf47ng
