Arkansas Fares Well Among Neighbors in Patents Issued

August 5, 2009
Innovate Arkansas routinely checks the website of the U.S. Patent Office to see what new ideas are being generated out of Arkansas. Check out the patents section of IA's redesigned site. This past week, for example, saw 1,897 patents issued (that includes all U.S. territories and possessions). Arkansas produced three. Which may not seem like a lot out of 1,897. But we fared pretty well compared with our neighbors. Texas produced 124 patents issued on Aug. 4 (second overall behind California's 481 and just ahead of New York at 123). Missouri saw 17 patents issued; Oklahoma and Tennessee produced 13 each; Louisiana had 2, and Mississippi generated one patent. Of all those states, Arkansas is the least populated. How do you think Arkansas fares in terms of innovation and producing new ideas? It may have lagged behind the curve in the past, but many believe, thanks to organizations such as IA, Accelerate Arkansas and others, that the state is catching up. Let us know what you think in comments.
