BreachBits Releases Energy Sector Cyber State of the Industry Study
BreachBits is an Arkansas-based company founded by U.S. military cyber warfare veterans who noticed that attackers were victimizing smaller organizations that did not have the resources to stay ahead of those attacks.
With their BreachRisk product, the BreachBits team follows the same process an attacker will in order to measure a company’s or an industry’s cyber risk, but in a way that is safe and controllable.
Most recently, BreachBits used their BreachRisk process to complete a Cyber State of the Industry Study for the U.S. energy sector and will be releasing state-by-state findings for all 50 states.
Key findings after analysis of nearly 100 U.S.-based companies within the oil and gas sector include:
- The majority of companies observed across the U.S. oil and gas industry are at risk of a successful breach by a dedicated cyber attacker.
- Companies over $50 million in annual revenue and 250 employees appear to have higher risk and higher occurrence of ransom-related threats
- Companies with low cyber risk tend to have larger attack surfaces, but not always. Downstream companies had larger attack surfaces but lower risk.
